Companhia das Letras publishes, for the first time in Portuguese, Freud's Complete Works, translated directly from German.
The Complete Works will be collected in twenty volumes, nineteen of which will contain texts and one of indexes and bibliography. They do not include the neurology—that is, non-psychoanalytic—texts from before the creation of psychoanalysis, which were omitted by the author himself when the first complete German edition of his works was published.
The German edition that served as the basis for this edition was Gesammelte Werke (Complete Works), published between 1940 and 1952. Although they constitute the most comprehensive collection of texts by the father of psychoanalysis, the seventeen volumes in the collection were poorly edited, perhaps due to the scarcity of the war and post-war years in Europe. Although arranged chronologically, they do not even indicate the year of publication of each work.
The text itself is generally reliable, but whenever possible, it was compared with the Studienausgabe [Study Edition], published by Fischer in 1969-75, from which a revised edition was consulted, later released.
These eleven volumes are organized by theme (like the first collection of Freud's works). They do not include several secondary texts or texts with repeated content, but instead incorporate, translated into German, the introductions and notes that the Englishman James Strachey wrote for the Standard Edition (London, Hogarth Press, 1955-66).
The goal of these Complete Works is to present the texts as faithfully as possible to the original, without interpretations or interference from later commentators and theorists of psychoanalysis, which can be found in the endless bibliography on the subject.
The editorial apparatus is limited to translator's notes, which generally provide information on terms and passages in problematic versions, so that the reader has a more precise understanding of their meaning. These notes reproduce the equivalents found in some foreign versions of the texts, in languages related to Portuguese and German.
